Answering the Ridiculous

Passage: Matthew 22:23
Service Type:

Bible Text: Matthew 22:23 | Speaker: Pastor James Zaebst

Often times a non-believer, skeptic or a seeker will ask a Bible believing individual a ridiculous question for the sole purpose of ridiculing his or her beliefs. The Scriptures are full of examples of this. When this happens do not dismiss the ridiculous question. Use the question as an opportunity to teach Spiritual truth.
In Matthew 22:23-33 the Sadducees came to Christ Jesus with a completely ridiculous question. They did not believe in a physical resurrection of the dead believer. They came up with a ridiculous question in the hope that Jesus would give a ridiculous answer and look silly. Jesus very clearly and intelligently explained a spiritual truth to them and rather than look silly “the multitude was astonished at his Doctrine”. When we get to Heaven our attention and affection will be on Christ Revelation 4:1-11.
In Luke 10:25-37 a Lawyer only wanted to “tempt” Jesus (Luke 10:25), and “justify himself” (Luke 10:29). The Lawyer wanted to appear morally superior to Christ Jesus. Jesus pointed out that his position as an expert in the Law did not indicate a love for his neighbor. The Priest and the Levite were experts of the Law as well but their actions indicated a lack of love for their neighbor. The Samaritan who was known for their indifference to the Law was the best neighbor. He alone put real love of a fellow man into real action. Real love always will produce real action (James 2:15-16).
In I Corinthians 15:35-50 a foolish man ask the ridiculous question that since the physical body decays away in the grave, how can we be raised up if we rot in the ground? Paul carefully explains that we will get a new spiritual body superior to the old one.
Never dismiss a ridiculous question. Use the opportunity to speak spiritual truth. If you do it intelligently you will not look ridiculous but credible and will informed.
