Are Tongues for Today? (Part I)
Bible Text: 1 Corinthians 12:1-30 | Speaker: Pastor James Zaebst | Series: Are Tongues for Today?
I Corinthians 12:1-3: The practice of speaking in tongues was not a new occurrence. The Corinthians had spoken in tongues as part of the worship of idols and some had cursed Christ in tongues with an interpreter.
I Corinthians 12:4-11: The Holy Spirit indeed gifted certain individuals with the gift of tongues. It was one of a multitude of gifts.
I Corinthians 12:14-18: Miraculous and revelatory gifts were given at God’s discretion to whom He willed (I Corinthians 12:27-30).
Not everyone spoke in tongues. Everyone did not have that gift.
I Corinthians 12:22: Tongues served as a sign for the non-believer. Tongues authenticated the message and messenger (Romans 15:19)
I Corinthians 14:26-28: There were very specific guidelines for the practice and use of tongues. Speaking one at a time with an interpreter. No more than three. If no interpretation is given stop speaking in tongues. Women were not to speak in tongues (I Corinthians 14:34).
