Building on Christ’s Finished Work Alone
I Corinthians 3:11: Christ’s finished work on the Cross is the one and only foundation. You can stand on nothing else (I Corinthians 15:1). Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection alone saves (I Corinthians 15:2-4). If a Believer builds, they build on this.
I Corinthians 3:12: Half of what Believers do is calledwood, hay, or stubble. This is religion, sacrament, and ritualism. This has no value for eternity, and no value to God whatsoever (Mark 7:1-9). Nothing of any value can be added to the finished work of Christ (Hebrews 10:10-14).
I Corinthians 3:13 and 14: God will only reward that which survives His refining fire. Much of what is done in the name of religion will burn up and merit no reward at all. Religion keeps people from God (Acts 17:15-27).True faith in Christ necessitates discarding religion.
I Corinthians 3:15: If someone is truly saved by trusting in Christ’s completed work on the Cross, they will be saved, though God burns up their religious works as He counts them as rubbish fit only for destruction in His refining fire. Let’s purpose together, and count all religion as refuse as He does (Philippians 3:4-9).
We cannot add to the finished work of Christ (Colossians 2:9-12).
