Focused Solely on That Which is Good

Passage: Philippians 4:8
Service Type:

Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Believers are to always be seeking out that which is good. When we have a choice about what to read or watch or what to listen to, we are to always look for the good. We are bombarded daily with an infinite source of news, entertainment and commentary; and we should actively search out and concentrate on the good stuff. It is so important that we carefully consider all that we are taking into our hearts and minds; for one day it will all come back out and bear fruit.

In Proverbs 4:23, we are told to safeguard our hearts with all diligence for out of our hearts come all the issues of life. We become, to a degree, the total sum of all we take in (Junk in, Junk out). If we feed on filth and rot, we become filled with filth and rot (Galatians 6:8). We must constantly safeguard all we take in to our hearts and minds:

(1.) By watching what we see (Matthew 6:22 and 23).

(2.) By watching where we go (Proverbs 4:26 and 27).

(3.) By watching what we read (Philippians 4:8 and Psalm 119:105).

(4.) By watching what we do (Psalm 119:9-11).

(5.) By watching whom we follow (Proverbs 1:10-15).

(6.) By watching our associations (II Corinthians 6:14-17 and I Corinthians 5:9-12). We should prefer believing friends (Romans 12:10).

Once we take something into our hearts and minds, it is in there for good. It remains there under the surface, ready to come out. We must constantly guard the doorways to our hearts and to our minds. Our eyes and ears serve as a doorway to our soul.

Seek out and focus on that which is good.

Shun and safeguard against that which is bad.
