The Story of Jospeh (Part I)

Passage: Genesis 37:1-28
Service Type:

Genesis 37:1-2: Joseph was the oldest son of Jacob's favorite wife (Genesis 29:17-20). Joseph only had one full brother whose name was Benjamin (Genesis 46:19). The reset were half brothers. Our story begins with Joseph tattling on his older half brothers.

Genesis 37:3-4: Joseph was his fathers obvious favorite son. He and Benjamin we all he has left of Rachel (Genesis 35:16-20). To love one child more than others is wrong (Psalm 127:3-5). Jacob's favoritism produced hatred (Galatians 6:7).

Genesis 37:6-10: Joseph dreams a dream in which the whole world (including his family) all bow down to him. This was obviously a prophetic dream (Numbers 12:6).

Genesis 37:11: His brothers were furious but Jacob knew in his heart that God was speaking through Joseph (Jeremiah 23:28-29). One day his family and the world would bow to Joseph (Genesis 37:9-10).

Genesis 37:13-14: Jacob makes Joseph into an informant (wrong). This makes the family even more divided and hostile.

Genesis 37:18-19: Envy lead to wrath, wrath leads to conspiracy to commit murder (James 1:13-15). Envy begins this whole chain of events (Genesis 37:11). That is why envy is such a serious sin (Romans 1:29-30).

Genesis 37:20: Joseph's brothers hatred of him reaches a climax as they commit themselves to his murder.

Genesis 37:21-22: Reuben thinking clearly and responsibly plans to save Joseph from death (Genesis 9:5-6).

Genesis 37:23-25: They throw him into a pit with no remorse at all.

Genesis 37:26-28: Then they profit from their crime by selling Joseph as a slave for approximately $400.00. Their hatred was intense.
