What is Faith?
Bible Text: Hebrews 11:1-3 | Speaker: Pastor James Zaebst
Hebrews 11:1-3: “Faith is the substance of things hope for” it is “the evidence of things not seen” or not completely known. Faith is a settled belief bit something short of complete knowledge. If we have complete knowledge in something we no longer need faith. Faith is more than persuasion but less than knowledge (Romans 8:24-25).
Real saving faith is a belief that leads to an action on the part of the believer. “By faith Abel offered” (Hebrews 11:4). “By faith Noah prepared an ark” (Hebrews 11:7) “By faith Abraham went out (Hebrews 11:8). Works cannot produce faith but faith will produces works in the life of a yielded believer. Faith or belief short of knowledge was necessary in these three examples. Abel believed he was doing right. Noah believed the flood was coming. Abraham believed God was able to bless him in a land unknown to him.
We today are asked to believe what we cannot know with certainty. I have faith the Christ was virgin born (Luke 1:31-37). Though I do not understand it (Luke 1:34). Everyone can believe (Romans 12:3). Some do and some do not (John 1:43-49) and Acts 3:1-10 and Acts 4:16-18).
I have faith (belief) in Christ’s sinless life (Luke 23:4,14,22,41). Though all men are sinners (Romans 3:23). I have faith in Christ’s vicarious death (that He died my death) (Hebrews 2:9). I have faith that all my sin was laid on Christ (Isaiah 53:5-6). Though I do not fully known why it was sufficient (I John 2:2).
